From available sources, the only reason I found why Notre Dame had a long span between bowl appearances was it was against school policy.

FYI: Notre Dame's bowl appearances went from the 1925 Rose Bowl and the Four Horsemen...and would appear in the 1970 Cotton Bowl, capping off college football's centennial season played in 1969.
