SEC Baseball Power Poll 2011 Week 3

My view from the outfield bleachers…..

Ok, so its been three weeks since the season as started. That means every team has played between nine to thirteen games now and we can really start to look inside the numbers of every team. There are a couple of magic numbers that I like to look for when judging teams. They are team average runs for and team average runs against. I like to see teams average 6 or more runs a game. That usually means a solid offensive team that’s offense can consistently put runs on the board.

This year we have 8 teams that are qualifying as of week three of the season so far, led by LSU scoring at a 10 runs a game clip. Arkansas averages over 8 runs a game while South Carolina and Miss. State both average over 7 runs a game. Auburn and Tennessee both meet the rule by averaging just over 6 runs a game. The nationally #1 ranked Florida Gators and Kentucky are barely fitting the bill as they both have scored 66 runs in 11 games making them both average 6 runs even a game. They both need to pick that stat up just a bit to keep themselves above the line.

As for the runs against rule, well that’s a little tougher. You have to allow 3.5 runs a game or less to meet the criteria for this one and only half the league is currently doing that. The #1 ranked Gators are well ahead of everyone in this stat even if their offense as struggled a bit. Florida is only allowing 1.9 runs a game to be scored through their first eleven games.

Miss. State is second, giving up just 2.6 runs a game, to start the season. Vanderbilt (3.2), South Carolina (3.3), LSU(3.4) and Arkansas(3.45) all are meeting the criteria as well. Ok, so its now time to see which teams are meeting both of my magic numbers to start the season. Drum roll please…… The five SEC teams that are safely off to a good start and meeting both of the magic numbers to start the season are the Florida Gators, South Carolina Gamecocks, Arkansas Razorbacks, Miss. State Bulldogs and the LSU Tigers. The one very highly nationally ranked team missing is the Vanderbilt Commodores. Vandy is easily meeting the runs against rule, but is only averaging 5 runs a game scored.

We all know, not every game is not going to be 1-0 and 2-1, so Vandy is going to have to get their offense producing a bit better to jump into the mix with the other five teams. I’ll keep everyone up to date with the stat as the season progresses and here is your week three SEC Power poll rankings.

1- Florida (10-1) The #1 Gators finally dropped a game at #6 FSU.

2- Vanderbilt (11-1) The #3 ranked Dores won all 4 games last week.
