Matt Walsh Spygate Tapes

by Erik C
(Maryland)

So let me understand something... Goodell destroys the tapes in Feb. Fines the team and Belicheat. Says no new evidence came out of the Matt Walsh meeting even though Matt turned in 6 tapes.

So were these copies of the original (destroyed) tapes? If so, why were there copies? It seems as though Goodell destroyed the tapes so that if something new came out, he could automatically say it was nothing new. I'm sick of Goodell and Belicheat. I'll bet Kraft's money is all through this crap!

Editor's Note: Erik -- I think the tapes Matt Walsh turned in were different tapes. But, I generally share your sentiments about Spygate.

different (new) tapes
by: Erik

To the Editor; Exactly! During the initial investigation, Goodell asked Belicheat if there were any more tapes. He told him to hand over ALL the tapes and belicheat swore that was ALL. The commish then says if any new evidence comes out, there will be further penalties. If these are different tapes (not copies), then this IS new evidence! where is the penalties?!

Editor: ah, i see. good point. i guess belichick would say he didn't know about these "new" tapes...??

Guys, you are ignoring the tapes themselves. There is no "there there".

Panning back and forth of hand motions that anyone can see.

You're acting like this a Dan Brown novel.

It's about a camera on the sidelines. If anything it's just a technical violation of an accepted practice (stealing signals).

You're actually upset that a former employee took tapes and kept them and Goodell didn't know about it??

So what? Of what real importance is that?

Old tapes would have been meaningless anyway through changes of coaching staff, signals, etc.

Unreasonable thinking
by: Anonymous

Well, I respectfully disagree. Signals may change every coaching change or every season, whatever. But, you play your division teams 2x a season. and all you really need is 3 or 4 signals and you got it made. If he gets the signals during the first quarter of first half, they can be used during the rest of the game. When I was in the US Navy, all we needed were 2 0r 3 words out of every Soviet signal, and we could get the whole message in seconds. And this "accepted practice crap", -no offense intended- is CRAP! If you get caught breaking a law, say...stealing at a jewelry store, your defense cannot be, man people steal all the time!" Just because murder happens all the time does not mean its OK. Are you a Patriot fan?

more..........
by: Anonymous

Also, all of the illegal taping wasn't done from JUST the sidelines! I guess my sentiment is, NO ONE SHOULD GET AWAY WITH CHEATING! NO WAY, NO SHAPE, NO HOW, NO MATTER WHAT!!! A I was a Patriots fan when I found out about this. The deeper this goes, the more disenchanted I become with him. I am sitting here praising what a good job they're doing and they're friggin' cheating! AND, did you read my very first thread about how my son told me cheating wasn't bad? I don't know about you, but I don't want my children raised with that thinking.

Still missing it
by: The CC

When a db puts his arm around a reciever and it isn't called - is that cheating? When a lineman holds and it isn't called, is that cheating? (I know it never happens)

Accepted practice refers to stealing signs. What's crap is that you can't read or you didn't know that.

I'll give you a better analogy than your jewelry store. The speed limit is 30 on a road. People commonly drive 35-40 on it. You get pulled over driving 35 and are charged with driving to endanger and your license is taken away. That's what spygate is.

CC, first off, check your insults. They're not necessary. Yes, some violations go unpunished but the offenders cannot use that when they get caught. The bottom line is, Belicheat took a chance and hoped it would never uncovered. when somebody, (ANYBODY) takes a chance on breaking the rules, they already know what the consequences are if they get caught. When I go over the speed limit, I know if caught, I may have to pay for my action. It can't be justified because other people get away it. Hopefully, eventually everybody will get caught. As I stated, I RESPECTFULLY disagree.

First off Anon, you started with the "crap" stuff, so I get kick out of how newly sensitive you are.

You never answered if holding is cheating.

You ignorned my speeding analogy. You speed, you get charged for driving to endanger and have your license taken. Spygate in nutshell.

by: Erik C

it's still cheating and they still lost the big one. and they won't be back to the big dance anytime soon! No amount of personal feelings can ever change the fact, They got caught cheating in the NFL, not speeding on a highway or anything else. Belicheat should be put out to pasture and brady should go play with his illegitimate child!

I do believe when I said it was crap, I preceeded it with no disrespect intended or no offense or something to that effect. If I was going to listen to some, "you started it CRAP!" I would go listen to my 11 year old sons, (legitimate, Erik C) argue. that's what children do.............

Holding is a "play violation" in the NFL and as it states, can happen inadvertently, filming the opponents signals is outright cheating with an advantage that can be used all game or season if you play the team twice. I don't think you play for the NFL so none of my "crap" comments are meant for you. Have a good day.

Welcome to Fanasty Island
by: The CC

Holding happens inadvertently? Now that's what I call crap. (No offense intended) "Play violation" - did you make that up?! Or did your legitimate son come up with that?

Spygate is a joke. Teams tape. Teams use cameras. Teams steal signals. Taping signals is minor infraction. You guys need to take a walk out of fanasty land.

Stealing signs is a time-honored and legal practice. As Rod Woodson noted, watching the Walsh tapes, you can see the hand signals out in the open. So can all the players and fans.

A mountain out of a molehill.

"The plane...the plane!"

Have a GREAT day.
