Johnny Majors Take on Phil Fulmer

by Donny
(Chatt., Tennessee)

Wow, didn't realize there was such animosity between Fulmer and Majors.

Of course, we all know, Fulmer replaced Majors in the middle of the 1992 season. Majors had heart surgergy during the season. Fulmer replace him, won a couple games; Majors returned; lost 3 straight and was fired and replaced by Fulmer.

There has been plenty of speculation over the years regarding Fulmer's role in putting a knife in Majors' back when he was recovering from heart surgury. Who knows?

But, here's what Majors told the Chattanooga Times Free Press when interviewed last week:

I wouldn’t put myself in comparison with Phillip Fulmer on anything. I’m above that.

When asked about his last year at Tennessee, Majors replied:

You mean the season of my ignominious demise? The season when, while I was recovering from my heart surgery, a few people whom I won’t name were operating on my back.

When asked about what would happen to Fulmer this year:

I’m not going to say what I hear. I’m not going to get into that. I have nothing to offer. I’m not in a supervisory position. But they (Fulmer’s staff) had success early because of the program we left them.

When asked about how Fulmer has survived:

Frankly, I think John Chavis (UT Defensive Coordinator)has saved his job for 10 years.

Wow!

John Majors

John Majors was fired because of his attitude(which he still has). He thought he was bigger than the program. Its time for Fulmer to go, but he did one thing Majors couldn.t. He won a National Championship.

Keep Phil for years to come
by: Anonymous

Being a loyal Georgia fan, it has been a pleasure watching good ole Phil do his job. Even though Tennessee surprises us once in a while, it's nice to know that you guys are one less team to worry about. I grew up watching former GA coaches like Ray Geoff (Ray Gump) and Jim Donnan turn a national power into mediocrity. For Georgia sake, please give Fat Phil a chance. Remember that he won you guys a National Championship only 10 years ago. It's been 28 years for Georgia!

Fulmer - Back Stabber
by: Charlie

Mark: Johnny did win a national championship. But that does not matter. Fulmer thought being a player's coach would get him thru. The only reason he wasn't fired 3 years ago was because Cutcliffe agreed to come back and rescue him. When David left for Duke, Fulmer sank again. The inmates took over the asylum. Hamilton may have to go before Tennessee can get back to Rocky Top. Tennessee has the money, the program and the fans to compete for a national championship instead of setting it's sights on the SEC East. I lost all my confidence in Fulmer when he started crying about Florida running the score up. That is NOT Tennessee.

Universal Rule
by: Anonymous

All my Life i've observed this one true almost total truth. Be careful what you deal because the deal is a wheel that can roll back all over you. Sometimes 7 fold. Majors was a good coach , a mans man. People are like chickens in a chicken house, one gets weak the others go ahead and peck him down. But we are humans and i was raised to care and help and bring one back to goos health and life. Sacrifice , it may be you next. I respect Coach Majors for the way he handled his mouth and mind on Fulmers firing. I just think Majors should have gotten the 6 million dollars. Oh well moneys not everything . People remember charcter after all the moneys long gone. Thanks and Only the best always to Coach Majors.

Charlie: Majors never won a national championship at Tennessee. He did it at Pitt. It kinda matters what school you win it for when justifying tenure.

Majors ego did him in
by: Oak Ridge fan

Johnny Majors was fired because he wanted Doug Dickey to make him the highest paid coach in the SEC. When Dickey said that wasn’t going to happen, Majors threw an office supply object at Dickey and walked out. He was fired the next day. Majors was jealous of Fulmer’s success while he was sidelined.
