Winterbottom Stakes Race 2020 | Horses, Betting & Form Guide

Week 8 Recap

The Winterbottom Stakes is part of Perth Summer Racing Carnival and appears in group 1. It is held at Ascot Racecourse every year and is usually the feature race in the November to December meeting. This sprint feature is contested in 1200m, one week after the Railway Stakes, which is contested in 1600m. Both events attract prize money worth $1 million.

Race History

Winterbottom Stakes, Railway Stakes, and Kingston Town Classic, all in group 1, are the carnival's most anticipated races. Prince of Wales Stakes and Colonel Reeves Stakes, both in group 3, have been good indicators of Group 1 in previous years.

The race, first contested in 1953, has grown to be Western Australia's favorite sprint race. The race was initially run over a 1400m distance but was reduced to 1200m in 1994, contributing to its development into a successful short-distance race.

The race had Group 2 status since 1979. However, it was elevated to Group 1 in 2011 and is now run as a standalone race in the same group. The prize money was increased to $1 million in 2015. These improvements on the race have attracted multiple national star sprinters, including recent winners Buffering (2013, 2015), Takeover Target (2008), Miss Andretti (2005), and Ortensia (2009, 2011).

All three Group 1 races attract different groups, including Western Australian locals and east coast raiders who come in after spring carnivals in Melbourne and Sydney. Several sprint events give horses a chance to compete at Perth.

They include the VRC Sprint Classic, the Manikato Stakes, the Moir Stakes, and the Everest. Additionally, horses that have performed well in Group 2 events such as Schillai Stakes, Linlithgow Stakes, and Schillai Stakes can also find a spot in the Winterbottom contest.

Horses to Watch Out For

One name is conspicuous in the list of recent winners. Buffering started his racing career quietly before becoming a superstar in recent years. The horse won both the 2013 and 2015 Winterbottom competitions and several other races, including VRC Sprint Classic, Manikato Stakes, and Moir Stakes.

Hey Doc returned from a one-year injury to claim the victory in 2019. The horse was surprisingly not most people's favorite in the betting. Hey Doc impressively won the title for the third time.

Betting

Choosing a bookmarker will enable you to bet on the race. Ladbrokes is a popular booky you can use to bet on the popular Stakes. Sign up for an account, deposit some money, then you can place a bet.
The 2020 race event will be held on November 28th, 2020, and will go for roughly 1 minute and 10 seconds.

Form Guide

The form guide for the Winterbottom race details all the facts about trainers, jockeys, barriers, and each horse's lead-up runs. Historical data show that horses in double digits have unsatisfactory records, with horses winning from wider than nine since 2005 being only Voodoo Lad in 2018 (13 of 14), Hey Doc in 2019 (13 of 14), and Magnifisio in 2014 (10 of 12).

Runners trained locally have an impressive record against visitors. On the other hand, Jockeys and interstate horses, including Buffering, Viddora, voodoo lad, and Hey Doc, have pretty impressive wins.
