SEC football depth dominates in 2009
by Jeff Caveney
Has anyone taken a look at college football teams' overall records after the bowl games this season, conference by conference? I think an overall winning record after the bowl games is a fair indicator of a good team these days: either you have to finish 2 games above .500 in the regular season (7-5 or better) or if you finish 6-6, you have to win your bowl game.
Check out the breakdown of each conference's number of team with winning records after the bowl games this season. To be fair to the 3 teams that finished 6-6 and did not get invited to a bowl, I gave them half credit:
Big 12: 7.5/12 (1 team 6-6)
Big East: 6/8
Conf USA: 6/12
Mt. West: 5/9
Big Ten: 5/11
Sun Belt: 3/9 (2 teams 6-6)
The SEC is so deep in good football teams that no other conference even comes close.
