Michigan vs SEC in Bowl Games

I'm not sure about your statistical record of games between the SEC and Big Ten, but Michigan is (after the Capital One Bowl game win over Florida today) 23-5-1 lifetime versus the SEC and 7-3 in bowl games versus the SEC. This was also cited at the close of today's game.

Additionally, a minor correction to your mention above of Penn State joining the Big 10 in 1990 - they were actually admitted in 1990 but did not begin football competition within the Big Ten until the 1993 season.

Michigan is not 23-5-1 against the SEC
by: Jeff

I heard that stat as well and immediately recognized it as being wrong, no matter how you calculate it.

Michigan is a very impressive 12-4 against historical members of the SEC and 20-5-1 against current members of the conference. That is very impressive, but no matter how you calcalate it, you can't get to 23 wins and another reason not to believe ESPN compiled stats.

by: SBAMA

Jeff this isn't about individual teams. Cut the crap. Its THE SEC vs the big 10. The SEC leads in every catagory. Now look it up and stop with the individual one team records. Again its SEC vs BIG 10. In Bowl Games OSU is 0-11 vs the SEC. They are 0-3 vs Alabama and so on. Enough scooter.

When you look at collage football championships it does not matter when it only matters how many, Alabama 12 Michigan 11 Notre Dame 11.

The history of these 3 schools say it all. I Will give the SEC the Johnny come lately award but you are not even close to the History of these 3 teams.

Yes I know Alabama is in the SEC but there reputation is way above the rest of the conference.

Let's show respect to both the SEC and BIg 10
by: Anonymous

Michigan really needed those wins vs the SEC cause their Rose Bowl record is terrible. Granted playing in Pasadena was a stupid thing for the BIg 10 to do cause it always gives the PAC 10 the advantage.(especially USC and UCLA) Anyway, another interesting stat is that PSU under Joe Pa is 7-4 vs the SEC in Bowl games. Also, in the Capital One Bowl (The first selection after the BCS for both the big 10 and SEC) the big 10 has won the last 4 in a row!! Iowa over LSU, Wis over Auburn, Wis over Ark, and then Mich over Florida. So what's this about the Big 10 being weak? The SEC is a strong conference, no doubt about it, but so is the Big 10. Let's stop trash-talking each other so much!!

Yo Scoots...OSU is an individual team as is Alabama. You can't make a blanket statement like "this isn't about individual teams" then give individual teams in your proof. You're killing me, no wonder the "tooth" brush was invented down there in SEC country!

Michigan v.s Ohio State
by: Anonymous

Please.....So recently Ohio State has been winning, take a look at the 90's. Michigan dominated the hell out of Ohio State (Not to mention knocking them off the number one spot a few times in a row >.>) Michigan owns the overall record between these two teams and the longest win streak. So seriously, stop with the Michigan bashing, you're just mad that we are the only Big Ten team competent enough to beat you guys. :)

What is the argument here?
by: Anonymous

The SEC is obviously a "What have you done for me lately?" crowd. Ok, here you go:

Michigan's bowl game record vs SEC (last 10 yrs)

2008 Cap One Bowl: Win vs Florida (Tebow's Heisman Year)
2003 Outback Bowl: Win vs Florida
2002 Citrus Bowl: Loss vs Tennessee
2001 Citrus Bowl: Win vs Auburn
2000 Orange Bowl: Win vs Alabama (SEC champs that year)
1999 Citrus Bowl: Win vs Arkansas

That adds up to 5-1 in bowl games (not even counting our regular season beatdown of Vanderbilt)

What is even better is that we beat Florida twice in Tampa and Orlando, respectively - pretty much a home game for them. Honestly, I know we get dominated playing the Pac-10 in the Rose Bowl, but at least if we finish 2nd or 3rd in the Big 10 - we can always get a nice victory from our whipping boys in the SEC...

SEC CANNOT BEAT MICHIGAN!
by: Anonymous

MICHIGAN IS 24-5-1 ALL TIME AGAINST THE SEC! THIS INCLUDES THE SEASON AND BOWLS.
WE BEAT FLORIDA TWICE IN FLORIDA! YOU HAD GROSSMAN AND TEBOW AS YOUR QB'S. MICHIGAN IS THE ONLY TEAM THAT KNEW HOW TO STOP TEBOW! IF HART WOULD NOT HAVE FUMBLED TWICE ON GATORS GOAL LINE THE SCORE WOULD HAVE BEEN 55-28 AND THE GATORS WERE DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPS! MICHIGAN HAD 3 TURNOVERS AND WE STILL BEAT YOU. YOUR SECONDARY COULD NOT STOP OUR SPEED RECEIVERS! MICHIGAN HAS ALWAYS HAD SPEED GUYS JUST AS GOOD AS THE SEC, BUT OUR COACHES HAVE ALWAYS COACHED CONSERVATIVE AND LIKED TO RUN THE BALL. THE SEC CAN BEAT OHIO STATE EVERYTIME BUT THEY CANNOT BEAT MICHIGAN! I HATE OHIO STATE! YOU CAN BEAT THE BIG TEN BUT THE ONLY TEAM IN THE BIG TEN YOU CAN'T BEAT IS MICHIGAN! RESPECT THAT AND INCLUDE THAT IN ALL YOUR SEC TRASH TALK! NUFF SAID!

Gators swallowed by Tide
by: Teblow sucks

...even with the SEC refs on their side, the Florida Gators could not make it to the Big Game this year. The Big Ten is quite "dormant" right now and Ohio State still sucks but Michigan WILL be back. I have to give credit to Alabama as they are showing that they are indeed the best college football team in the nation. I believe the Tide will crush whomever they play in the Championship Game.

Michigan wins over Vandy
by: Just a Fan

Keep in mind, the high number of Michigan wins against Vandy came between 1900-1920. However, Vandy was also one of the best, if not the very best, football programs in the south during that time, routinely beating Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, etc. Heck, they were one of the very best teams in the country.

Big Ten = SEC. End of story.
by: Clayton Tinkle

You Cant say Michigan's Championships from way back yonder dont count, If thats the case, the floridas fifty years from now wont either, Its about making history, And Michigan has historically manhandled the SEC, All credit due, They do the same to OSU, But if you can beat them, why cant you beat us, Even when you have Mr.Heisman winner.

Simply put, Michigan has matched up against the SEC very well all time, and has shown them the Big Ten is credible. The only teams to have two BCS teams this year were the SEC, AND BIG TEN. Both teams won. National Championships Claimed by individual colleges have the Big Ten At 39, And the SEC at somewhere around 34?

Extensive research done by myself, shows that the SEC has been around for 77 years, The Big Ten , for 115 years, So we have more time to get championships, Simple math shows that in our first 77 years, we have 34 championships, Wow, Look at that SEC, were even. Can we just unite for a common cause of good college football?

Go Blue.

I?m tired of arguing with you guys about football, Being it conference, Or individual team. So I?m here to put this to rest, Once and for all. All of these Stats are legitimate.

The Information comes from ESPN?s Encyclopedia of college football. I didn?t just make it up. So, Indulge yourself, and I assure you, no corners have been cut, and all Information is completely accurate.

You Cant say Michigan's Championships from way back yonder don?t count, If that is the case, then Florida fifty years from now wont either, Its about making history, And Michigan has historically manhandled the SEC, All credit due, The SEC do the same to OSU, But if you can beat them, why cant you beat us?

Even when you have Mr. Tebow, when he won the Heisman. Simply put, Michigan has matched up against the SEC very well, all time with a 24-5-1 record Versus SEC teams. Also, 2-0 all time versus your beloved gators, and has shown them the Big Ten is credible. The only teams to have two BCS teams this year were the SEC, AND BIG TEN. Both teams won. National Championships Claimed by individual colleges IN THE CONFERENCE has the Big Ten at 40, And the SEC at 31.

To make this fair, The SEC has been around for 77 years. The Big Ten, for 115 years. So,

Given, we have more time to get championships. Simple math shows that in our first 77 years, we have 35 championships. Wow, Look at that SEC. The SEC & Big Ten are not even after all, we?ve got 4 more in the same amount of time, and 9 more over all.

Just to put icing on the cake, you?ve had 12 teams to get yours. We got all 35 with 10. Can we just unite for a common cause of good college football?

by: Clayton

Clayton...using your logic then the Ivy League own everyone as they have 62 national championships. Of course they were the only ones playing for most of those and seasons were about four games long, but its still the same right? Look I'm a Bama fan, but even I can't recognize those early championships. Pre poll-era everything is suspect. IF we look at post-poll championships where there at least was a concensus as to how the champion is selected (and by the way both th SEC adn Big 10 existed by this point) then the SEC has 24 and Big 10 has 21.

by: Anonymous

To me it's not a conference thing. I hate Ohio St....period. Whoever beats my enemy is my friend. I'm a Michigan fan, our rivalry is against OSU - Sparty is our little brother who's now all grown up. The SEC plays OSU very well, but tanks it against Michigan. OSU however plays Pac10 teams very well, the SEC doesn't (neither does Michigan). Every team has teams that they just don't match up very well with. As the subject for this thead is Michigan vs SEC in Bowl Games - the historic and recent records speak for themselves. Michigan matches up very well against the SEC in bowl games and regular season games. We have a winning record against the SEC and may see them in a bowl game this year. Kudos to Saban for signing an OOC game against Michigan and a home-away series against Sparty (Michigan St). I'm no fan of the Tide but they are getting bold in their scheds (Tennessee has always been that way) it's time for the Gators to come out of the Swamp for a change.

Midwestern Men, Not "southern boys"
by: Know your roots

All 3 national championship winning coaches...Saban, Meyer, Miles...all come from Big 10 Country (Ohio, actually). Don't forget where your roots are.

Saban played at Kent State, coached at Michigan State twice (DB's and DC from '83 to '87, followed by being the head coach from '95 to '99) and was an assistant at osu (DB's coach).

Les Miles was born in Elyria, Ohio, played at Michigan, and coached the o-line there as well for a period of time before making his rounds in the Big 12.

Urban Meyer was born in Toledo (that's in Ohio for the rednecks who have never seen a map), and played in Cincinnati. He was also an assistant coach at osu (TE's and WR's).

They're not "southern boys" winning those championships for you. They're midwestern men.

Big Ten vs. SEC
by: bigorange/ maize and blue

Trust me when I say this, SEC and Big Ten are the two best conferences in college athletics period. I enjoy now that the gator bowl dumped the bigeast vs acc matchup, I wonder why? They dumped them both mind you. Because the Big Ten and the SEC travel unlike anyother. I've been to the Big House, Rocky Top, S.C., Mich St., I really don't give a rats aaaaas whos better, I know one thing though if I had a choice to pick two conferences and have a playoff with them, they would be the two. Both have great fans, and much respect towards one another, unless your a biggot and no matter what you either hate the north or viceversa, which means your no different than the third world nation thinker.

I grew up in Michigan and bleed blue, but i went to school at the University of Tennessee, love them both. I'm just glad i have two teams to cheer for and I get double the rivalrys. I wish they would do more home and aways, but these conferences are tough thats why you don't see these teams play eachother in out of conference , rarely. Would love to see michigan play home and away with Tennessee. Now that the Big has Nebraska that definetly adds. Looking forward to these bigger conferences it's the only way to a playoff. As for everybodys national championships, get real those are all mythical, voted by people thats a joke. Once a 8 to 16 team playoff format comes they will continue to be mythical. If college baseball can do it, college bb can do it, college hockey can do it, so can football. How very easy without prolonging season. Make conferences bigger, have no out of conference games, that will give you 4 weeks extra right there. Out of conference is rediculous anyway not like any of these schools actually have the balls to schedule 3 good schools, because they could lose out on bcs money. Playoff will come soon, and thank God, won't have to listen to about whose the best, on the field beeeaatches. GO BLUE!!! GO BIG ORANGE!!!

PEACE to All non-biggot college football fans, who don't live back in the 1800's.

Michigan Man Livin' in Florida
by: MichFlaGuy

I'm a Michigander who relocated to Florida 6 years ago. I watch a LOT of colleg football on Saturdays, and see a LOT of SEC games now, and here is the stark, honest truth:
The SEC is the best conference in the nation right now...and has been for the past 10 years. They don't always have the best TEAM...but team-for-team, the SEC is stronger than everyone else for one simple reason: the Big Five.
Florida, LSU, Auburn, Alabama, and Georgia\Arkansas. Add an upstart South Carolina to that list and you have damn- near SEVEN top-notch national-level programs in one conference.
No other conference - not even the Big 10 - can match that line-up.
Simply put...the SEC has EVOLVED into a better conference.
That being said...for some reason, Michigan DOES OWN the SEC in bowl games...and yes, both historically and recently.
It's just a fact...OSU chokes literally EVERY time against the SEC...but Michigan ALWAYS steps up and plays well.
Even though I now live in the tropics...I still bleed maize & blue. Go BLUUUUUUEEEE!!!!!

The rest of the Big 10 has a horrible record against the SEC. Nobody denies that the SEC is the best football conference in football, just like the ACC is the king of basketball. But the bottom line is The Michigan Wolverines have a great record vs SEC teams in or out of Bowl Games. I am looking forward to that trend to continue in 2012. Go Blue!

LOL READ THIS FROM PEARL RIVER, LA
by: Daniel Whitehurst

ok so im a big fan of LSU, and OHIO STATE, I ABSOLUTLY HATE MICHIGAN, SORRY GUYS so ive \been doing research on osu vs MICH and SEC so on....

heres what i have to say, and this is legit Reasoning too..

Ohio state is 0-9 vs sec because on every year they played aginst SEC SEC WAS AT THIER HIGHEST STANDING, and as for michigan SEC WAS AT THERE LOWEST, and ALSO OHIO STATE HAS ONLY PLAYED SEC 9 TIMES VS MICH 24 - 5- 1 BLAH BLAH BLAH WHAT EVER RECORD SEE THE DIFFRENCE ANYONE? you got a team thats only played 9 times vs 30+ ? if ohio state played aginst a SEC team every season i bet you they'd start winning. sec and BIG10 uses diffrent TYPE and diffrent play books as too the same confrense has learned the other teams plays over the course of 50+ years or what/ever. so now u see? its not a fair trial for big ten vs sec excluding mich cause they started to play a sec team every year.
