Georgia's First Game

by Mark Moss
(Punta Gorda, Florida)

Georgia's first game was against Mercer University, not Athens. The game was played in Athens on 1/30/1892 with a score of 50-0. This is the same year that the Dawgs first played Auburn and kicked off the South's oldest rivalry. That game, on 2/20/1892, was won by Auburn 10-0. Just thought you'd like an update on the error.

Names of players of first game
by: Cindy Harrison

Since people are into finding their ancestors, such as I, I have always heard that my greatgrandfather, George Orr Shackelford, was on the first football team(s) between 1892 and 1900.
I looked at the archieve picture, but since he was so young and in early photos, it is hard to tell. All I remember him being was almosst bald and older. If you could tell me if this was true about him being on the team and which one he is in the archieve picture. If you could find a way to list all the players for other generations, this would be extremely appreciated. Thank you.
