Another favorite moment in Georgia Football History

by Kavin Caruso
(Georgia )

On September 22, 2007 Georgia went to Tuscaloosa to face Alabama. Georgia only beat Alabama once in Tuscaloosa that was in 2002. The Alabama Crimson Tide came into the game 3-0, 1-0 in conference play. Georgia was 2-1, but 0-1 in conference play. This game was played on a Saturday night and was nationally televised. Georgia did not want to go 0-2 in conference play because they had already lost to South Carolina at home.

In the 1st quarter, Georgia struck first with a Thomas Brown 10 yard td pass from Stafford. In the 2nd quarter, Georgia tacked on with 3 more on a Brandon Coutu 45 yard field goal. Alabama came down the field right before halftime and managed 3 points. Leigh Tiffin kicked a 40 yard field goal as time expired. Georgia was now leading 10-3 at the half. In the 3rd quarter, Alabama made some noise by John Parker Wilson’s ability to scramble and throw. Alabama got right back in the game with a John Parker Wilson’s 1 yard touch down run. The game is now tied 10-10. The Bulldogs did not waste anytime. Matthew Stafford marched the Dogs down the field, and took the lead on Knowshon Moreno’s 6 yard touch down run. Georgia now leads 17-10 late in the 3rd quarter.

In the 4th quarter, Alabama scored twice after Georgia’s Brandon Coutu kicked a 47 yard field goal to make it 20-10. Alabama marched down the field a got a Leigh Tiffin 22 yard field goal. The game is now close, 20-13. The Georgia Bulldogs couldn’t capitalize in the 4th quarter, and here comes Alabama. John Parker Wilson again marched the Crimson Tide to the end zone late in the game. John Parker Wilson tied the game on his 6 yard touch down run. The game is tied and Georgia just ran out the clock.

Now we are in overtime, but don’t have to worry about the game clock.

Alabama started first on the 25 yard line. The Crimson Tide ended up with a 3 and out, Leigh Tiffin kicked a 42 yard field goal. It’s now 23- 20 Alabama. Georgia starts out at the 25 yard line. This was my favorite part of the game. Matthew Stafford threw a 25 yard passing touchdown to Mikey Henderson to end the GAME!!! Georgia wins 26-23! Alabama fans were STUNNED! As Georgia celebrated, Bryant-Denny Stadium was quiet. The visitor section was making lots of noise! Alabama got their first loss and only their second loss to Georgia in Tuscaloosa. Georgia ended up going to the Sugar Bowl that season while Alabama went to the Independence Bowl.

This was one of my favorite moments in the history of Georgia football.
