2013 Mississippi State Bulldogs Football Preview

By Scott Sergent

The Good: Tyler Russell is as good as they come and if he were in Tuscaloosa or Athens, he might get more ink.  The fifth year QB set school records last year, and his 24 TD's with only ten interceptions was even more impressive because eight of those picks came in the last two games.  The Bulldogs turnover margin was +16, which was best in the SEC and fifth in the nation.

The Bad: In the SEC, if you cannot run the football, or cannot stop the run, you will be left standing on the curb when the season ends.  State was ranked tenth in rushing, and eleventh in rush defense in the conference last year.  That has to improve.

The Ugly: A November slate of South Carolina, Texas A&M, Alabama, Arkansas and Ole Miss would even out a scare into Chuck Norris.

Starters Returning: 6 - Offense/5 - Defense.

Schedule: Once again, the second half of the Bulldogs schedule will determine if they are contenders or pretenders since the first two months are manageable.  The opening weekend will be an indication as they travel to Houston for a huge game against Oklahoma State.  After the Cowboys, things will get easier as they will leave home only once (September 14th at Auburn) and get LSU at home.  There is a possibility the Bulldogs could be 7-0 again, but then reality sets in when November arrives.  Trips to South Carolina and Texas A&M, then Alabama will not be easy.  The usual season finale against Ole Miss will be difficult, but does come at home.

Outlook: Dan Mullen's teams are competitive and play hard, so they will be a tough opponent for anyone.  However, both lines have to step it up, and the inexperienced WR's will have to give Russell dependable hands to throw to.  A November to remember will determine if Mullen and the Bulldogs can finally reach elite status in the SEC.

Prediction: 5th SEC West.
