Detroit Lions a Disappointment to Michigan

by Candace Lee

The Detroit Lions are a disappointment to everyone who enjoys watching a football game after a long, hard week of work or school. Frustrated, embarrassed, and confused, are the words that comes to mind, when I watched the Lions play last season.

At some point, the Detroit Lions had Michigan believing that they were a promising team. In 1990’s they were in the playoffs for most of their season. They even won their division title. So where did it all go wrong? Some say it all went wrong when one of the greatest running backs, Barry Sanders retired.

In 2001, the Detroit Lions started to make history. For three straight seasons, the Detroit Lions could not win on the road, giving them a record of 0-24. Last season we all expected a playoff appearance. They had an undefeated record for pre – season. All of the players seem to have all the set plays memorized, almost as if it was a part of their everyday movement.

Then the start of the season brought all of us dangerously close to the truth, we were going to have another bad season. However, The Lions had a more trick in their pockets. Not only was it a bad season, but not one game was won, making the Lions officially the worst team in NFL’s (National Football League) history.

Michigan is a state that prides itself on having good sports teams. In 1989, 1990, 2004 the Detroit Pistons were champion of the NBA (National Basketball League) and have gone to the Eastern finals four times in the last seven years.

In 2003, The Detroit Shocks won their first WNBA (Women National Basketball League) championship and have gone to the finals four times in the past five years. As of 2008, they now have three.

The Detroit Tigers have not been a team of championships. They went to the World Series 2006 the first time in 20 years. They lost in five games but we had hope that in a few years they could win it all.

The Detroit Red Wings the team we are all proud to have in Michigan. They won the most Stanly Cups in the NHL (National Hockey League) history. The Red Wings are the happy owners of eleven Stanley cups. The Red Wings have not missed many playoffs, although they’ve had a few early exits, they were able to make it up the following season or seasons in some cases.

Michigan also has its great college teams such as Michigan University and Michigan State University, who both have enjoyed championships.

Detroit Lions are definitely a disappointment to Michigan and sports fans all over the world. There is one thing about sports fans; we are forgiving, if they could win at least five games next season, the 0-16 season would disappear from our memory.

I think that Michiganders want most is to sit back, relax with an ice-cold drink and a large bag of chips, and enjoy our teams, if not wining at least playing so we think they are going to win.

I agree the Lions were horrible last season, but if they could have a decent season this year, then I could start to get over that terrible 2008 season.
