2011 - 2012 Arkansas Razorbacks Basketball Preview

SEC Sports Fan is predicting that the Arkansas Razorbacks will finish 6th in the SEC this season and probably get a bid to the NIT Tournament. Get the details at 2011 - 2012 Southeastern Conference Basketball Predictions and Preview.

This Arkansas Razorbacks program is at the exact same point that it was at last season: a crossroads in which head coach John Pelphrey could either be allowed one more year, (and based on the recruiting job he has done for the 2011 season, I think he will be) or he could be fired due to another lackluster performance by an Arkansas program that, in the 80's and early 90's, was absolutely dominant and was consistently mentioned in conversations with teams like Kentucky and Duke.

The Razorbacks lose one of their most dominant players from a year ago, Courtney Fortson, to the NBA Draft. While some think this could be a blessing in disguise due to the discipline problems that Fortson was a part of last season when the Hogs had to suspend much of their roster for the first few games, it is never a good thing when your best player leaves and there is no one that seems to be ready to step into his shoes.

This is not meant to take away from the team, however. Rotnei Clark, the Razorbacks best returning player going into the season, averaged 15.1 points per game. He was one of the most dangerous 3 point shooters in the nation last season, and the Hogs will definitely need him to step up if they are going to make a run for the SEC West crown.

Another player that Arkansas will look to to perform in big games is Marshawn Powell. He was the best freshman in the SEC after John Wall and Demarcus Cousins last season, and I expect him to build on that experience this year. He averaged 14.9 points per game, and 6.7 rebounds. He and Clarke are the two of the Hogs top three scorers last season, and the weight of this season looks to fall heavily on their shoulders.

John Pelphrey has shown that he can recruit well, and he has also shown that he can get his players to play through adversity. Arkansas was in nearly every game last season, even at the beginning when they had many of their players suspended. If they can get some production from a few lesser known players this year, they may surprise a few people. I think at this point, however, they will fall just short of making the NCAA Tournament without a deep run through the SEC Tournament. The NIT looks like a solid lock for them this season.
